Restoration of historic barracks and horse stables for theater, dance theater, museum purposes and art exhibitions
The cultural site Schiffbauergasse lies at the nexus of the Humboldt bridge, the Berliner Street and the Deep Sea east of the Potsdam city center .
The ensemble consists of several buildings that were built for different industrial and military purposes, but now house various cultural institutions.
The former stables were developed into the Museum Fluxus, a theater and a gallery and a former riding hall was converted to an event hall for the youth center „Waschhaus“.
The Machine Hall was built in 1955 with a reinforced concrete frame construction in an industrial architectural style as a simple utility building for the municipal gas works. The free standing building is listed in the historical register. It has been used since 1991 by the fabrik e.V., a modern dance theater. The building was refurbished under consideration of a fire protection concept and historical preservation requirements and includes a large hall with new gallery level and additional areas such as dressing rooms and rehearsal rooms for the artists.
Despite some difficult conditions for planning and implementation, the construction document planning and construction management were carried out under a tight schedule and on budget and the essential character of the machine hall was able to be preserved.
