Remodeling and renovation of a monument
The Gardenresidenz Charlottenburg project included the renovation and loft conversion of a former hospital building, built from 1899 to 1915. The building is a unique monument listed in the built heritage preservation list of Berlin.
The old building to be renovated consists of a west wing along Sophie- Charlottenburg Straße, the central part along Mollwitzstraße and an east wing on Heubnerweg. The garden situated in front of the old building structure along Mollwitzstraße is a listed garden memorial. North of the Gartenresidenz where the former University Hospital Charlottenburg was located, 15 new residential buildings are going to be built in order to densify the urban context. Furthermore 161 apartments are implemented to the 5-storey heritage-protected main building. A newly constructed building complements the old structure of the east wing, showing the building’s former H-shaped layout. The heritage-protected garden will be refurbished und supplemented by new planting.
During the first construction phase demolition work and early non-structural main works were carried out. A showroom was built following the designs of Studio Aisslinger. The second construction phase includes the rehabilitation, reconstruction and loft conversion of the former hospital building.
